July's privately organized class was great! (see "Sandra Brown Rug Hooking" on FB) and there are still dates available for another dye workshop in 2024.
Bring a favorite pattern to class and we will dye wools chosen from your color plan to use in your new piece. We will cover all the basic dye techniques: open pan with smooth and textured wools, gradation swatches, dip and spot dyeing, casserole or "painted" dyeing, marbelized and onion skin dyeing.
Along the way we will be experimenting with color creation as you, the student, imagine them, so there will be opportunities for hands-on dyeing as well.
Arrive 1pm Day #1 - Check in, introductions and social hour, dinner provided, discuss projects, begin dyeing.
Days #2 &b #3 - dyeing instruction, hooking, breakfast and lunch provided, dinner out at a local restaurant (not included)
Day #4 - Wrap up with projects, wool selections and questions, breakfast included, departure 11am.
Cost: $485 + $80 materials fee includes 1 yard dyed wool + 1 yard fine linen, class fee, double room, breakfasts and lunches and first evening's dinner. $200 to reserve, and balance of $365 by 30 days prior to workshop. This is a 4 person max class!**
Late October, early November, 2024 (3 days - still working dates out)
Reserved for teachers and experienced dyers eager to expand their already deep knowledge of color and dyeing into areas like: methods for matching colors (e.g., Fall neutrals, which aren’t so neutral after all), compiling a useful inventory, sharing the easiest and most dependable dyeing formulas and techniques (everyone goes home with shared wool samples and formulas) and generally enjoying the pleasures of “what if” and “let’s try it!” Workshop supplies dyes and material fee covers two yards of wool dyed in class.

Students are encouraged to sign up with a rug hooking friend, otherwise a roommate will be assigned since all rooms are doubles. If the workshop needs to be cancelled by me, your entire deposit and class fee will be refunded. If you cancel but are able to find a substitute for your place in the workshop, your deposit and class fees will be refunded. Otherwise, cancelling in the 30 day period prior to workshop means deposit and fees are 50% refunded. After the 30 day prior date passes there are no refunds (unless you find a replacement.
A group of six can also arrange for a workshop of their choice (4 max for dye workshops since they are hands-one), scheduled at everyone's convenience. Turn a gathering of friends into a learning retreat!
This dye workshop can be privately scheduled and dates are still available for 2024
We will cover basic dye techniques (open pan, spot, gradation swatches, dip and casserole dyeing) and then advance to the next level of dyeing: how to match color samples and work with pre-colored wools, breakout (“shimmer”) dyeing, combination dip/casserole dyeing for flowers, leaves and scrolls, creating custom plaids, dyeing a “suite” of colors from one formula, using nature as inspiration, painting wool in layers and techniques for keeping the best methods for labeling and record keeping.
